New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more versatile and easy to drive while still looking elegant.

The general principle is that the larger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear allow you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or in difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy out with a newborn and 3 year old and found that it was able to handle grass, cobbles rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt solid to push, and very solid on difficult terrain. The tyres, which are inflated and require to be pumped up regularly and have a suspension built-in. This was extremely comfortable for my children.

The shape and size of the seat is another thing to think about. It should be big enough for your child's comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer an option to lie flat completely while others will only allow the parent to be facing one.

Larger wheels

Many three wheeled buggies have rotating front wheels that aid you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability with which they can be driven. This is especially useful when you bump against a tree or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.

This could be problematic if you intend to use it for jogging or you need to get through narrow doorways while out and about. Many models have small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to manoeuvre

One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it's much more maneuverable especially with a child on the way. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels turn on a dime, and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough ground with the swivel rear wheel being particularly helpful. I was also impressed with how well it coped with bumps, particularly when using the brake operated by hand. I found it to be extremely stable when going downhill or over uneven terrain."

The only drawback to this incredible maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean it has to struggle in tight spaces - something to consider if you live in a city region. If this is the case, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better choice for you.
