Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word meaning "all inclusive," the group was determined to explore every style of music.

During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using the new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out.
