Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model) they employ smart mapping to create detailed floorplans that avoid obstacles like cords and furniture leg. They also come with carpet boost, a feature which boosts the robot hoover and mop's power when it spots a lot of dirt on the carpet in order to get it cleaned up quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests of floors with no carpet and are especially adept at cleaning hair from dogs. They do have some flaws, however, that prevent them from being our top option. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to getting stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate through rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.

However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also extremely quiet and best robot hoover works while you are at work or at school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' boxy units this mop and robot automatic vacuum cleaner and mop is one of the most attractive designs in our reviews. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work or in the evening when you are trying to sleep.

It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically empty the vacuum's bin, refills the water tank, and cleans and dries the mop pads.

The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the degree of dirt they are.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose one with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home using the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also useful. For families that are busy, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, plan a spot clean or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt to ensure better performance. The app also gives access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It features a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction, as well as intelligent combs to remove pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba.
