Path of Exile Item Upgrades

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase when it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it should be heavier.

There are several kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have distinct effects. Certain upgrades give armor a greater amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item can receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as indicated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which are shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Some upgrades also require charges in order to be used. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and then found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which grants a small but useful bonus to speed of movement and the ability to escape. Then, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in a similar fashion to how the player can acquire weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade item slot that can accommodate either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant bonuses and abilities that are active even when the character is not in combat. This allows a hero to be more efficient when they are not active.
