Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but is also a great pet for children.

Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, pledged to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live for the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who bond with their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
