Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and purchased an obnoxious one-year-old blue african grey parrot grey parrot named Alex, she began a 30-year research project that altered the way we think about the avian brain. He was awarded for correct pronunciation and definition with the object associated with the word.

Another fascinating aspect of the way that she taught Alex was that she taught him the meaning behind words, not just the sounds. He and his gang would drink milk mixed with drugs to prepare themselves for "ultraviolence."

What was Alex like in terms of intelligence?

Even after his passing, he continues to inspire people all over the world. Free Solo is a film about Alex and his amazing accomplishments in climbing. This film has received a lot of critical acclaim, and is considered to be one of the top documentaries of all time. It has won numerous awards including the Academy Award in 2019 for Best Documentary Feature.

In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues of avian intelligence. Alex was able to perform more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions, was able to count sets of objects up to six, and demonstrated math skills that were advanced for a bird at the time.

He also was able to communicate with other animals using a sign language, and he had a good grasp of grammar. He employed a method of training called "rival model," which involved two trainers modeling to the bird what they wanted it to learn. The trainers would switch positions often so that the bird could be able to interact with both of them and receive rewards and attention from each of them.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to accomplish so many things throughout his life due to his strength of character, as well as his desire to live his life on his terms.
