Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative in a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and perhaps be reunited with her orca mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal issue.
