Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member, on a plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who want to see her released to the wild. Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to move the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
